| The procedure is performed in endoscopy either under direct vision endoscopically or not in order to place the capsule into the oesophagus. After the capsule is sited 6cm above the Z Line, suction is applied, drawing a small amount of tissue into the capsule. The capsule is then locked into place with a needle by the delivery system. The placement procedure is simple to perform and well tolerated by most patients.
The capsule begins measuring the pH levels of the oesophagus immediately, transmitting pH measurements wirelessly to a small receiver worn on the waistband or belt. The receiver houses three symptom buttons, and patients can be asked to press the corresponding button when they experience heartburn, regurgitation, or chest pain during the procedure. It is recommended that a diary be kept by patients and that they record periods of sleeping and eating during the procedure to be added into the analysis of the data by the system.
Upon completion of the procedure, the data is uploaded in seconds and the brand new Rapid pH will analyse the data to provide a comprehensive analysis including the De Meester score for example, giving a swift and appropriate diagnosis. The disposable capsule will spontaneously detach and pass naturally through a bowel movement a few days after the test. |
